It’s no surprise that one of the more discouraging signs of aging is hair loss. What is surprising? Studies have found that the psychological impact it can have is more severe in women than in men. In fact, one study found that 52% of women were very to extremely upset by their hair loss, compared with 28% of men. Multiple serums, treatments and supplements abound that claim to help regrow hair and restore your confidence. But one that has been getting a lot of buzz lately from social media posts to doctor recommendations is Nutrafol. So we spoke to top hair loss doctors to find out more about using Nutrafol for hair growth.
What have you tried to reverse hair loss?
What is Nutrafol?
Understanding what Nutrafol is and how it works for hair growth, it helps to have some background on what causes thinning hair. Hair loss can occur for many reasons, such as genetics to medical diagnoses like thyroid dysfunction or deficiencies in vitamins and minerals like zinc. Other factors include menopause, weight loss, increased stress levels and even the type of shampoo you use on your hair. Discovering the cause and finding a cure is not an easy feat. That’s where Nutrafol may make a big difference.

While the brand offers a few different dietary supplements, the ones that are getting the most attention are Nutrafol Women, designed to support hair health and promote hair growth for women between the ages of 18-44, and Nutrafol Women’s Balance, which is for women aged 45 and over to specifically target the six key root causes of hair thinning triggered by perimenopause and menopause: stress, lifestyle, metabolism, nutrition and aging. Both options are formulated with many of the same botanicals, vitamins and minerals, and what makes them stand apart from other supplements is that rather than just targeting a single cause of hair loss, they are made to address multiple causes—perfect for those who aren’t sure what the culprit is.

The ingredients in Nutrafol
“Nutrafol contains some well-known ingredients like saw palmetto (believed to reduce levels of DHT, a hormone linked to hair loss), biotin, collagen, ashwagandha (an adaptogen that may help with stress management) and curcumin (an anti-inflammatory),” explains Ross Kopelman, MD, a hair transplant surgeon at Kopelman Hair Restoration. “Many of these ingredients have some supportive studies behind them, but it’s important to note that not all have rigorous, large-scale clinical trials directly linking them.
Viktoryia Kazlouskaya, MD, PhD, a double-board-certified dermatologist at Dermatology Circle in New York City, who counts hair loss as one of her specialties, adds that Nutrafol’s other components include a vitamin complex, which has shown varying degrees of success in hair loss studies, and herbs with anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties. “As a hair loss expert, I strongly advise anyone experiencing hair loss to consult a specialist, get an accurate diagnosis, and address the root causes with targeted interventions and medical treatments,” she cautions. “That said…nearly all hair loss experts agree that natural components and supplements can play a role in hair restoration and can be incorporated into a treatment regimen.”
Additionally, Dr. Kopelman notes that “supplements alone are rarely a ‘magic bullet’ and often work best when combined with medical treatments like topical minoxidil or PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy.”

Does Nutrafol work for hair growth?
According to research, yes! One study found that perimenopausal, menopausal and postmenopausal women with self-perceived thinning hair taking Nutrafol Women’s Balance daily had more vellus (baby) hairs and more terminal (longer, thicker) hairs with less shedding than compared to those in the placebo group.
A second, nine-month study, 100% of women showed visible improvement in hair growth after 9 months, 93% saw improvement in dryness and brittleness after 6 months and 93% felt their hair looked healthier after 6 months.
And in a 6-month clinical trial of women taking Nutrafol Women, an evaluating dermatologist counted more vellus hairs and more terminal hairs in women taking Nutrafol compared to the placebo group. A whopping 90% saw overall improvement in their hair, 86% saw improved hair growth and 84% saw less shedding.
All of the doctors we spoke with said their patients have also seen results. “I’ve had experience with Nutrafol and have suggested it in certain cases as part of a comprehensive hair restoration approach. Some patients have seen improvement in hair thickness and reduced shedding, particularly when their hair loss was related to stress, hormonal fluctuations, or nutritional deficiencies. However, it’s important to remember that results can vary,” says Dr. Kopelman.
Dr. Kazlouskaya has also had patients who report great benefits from using Nutrafol. “These are often younger patients with mild hair thinning or early-stage hair loss, where changes are still reversible. Even patients with more advanced hair loss sometimes report improvements.” A good example? She had one patient who did not want to have any medical treatments and opted for natural treatments. “We used a laser treatment for her paired with growth factor serum and Nutrafol supplements, and she had great results.” See the before and after photos here!

What is the dosage of Nutrafol for hair growth?
The recommended dosage is four capsules per day. Tip: Taking all four capsules at once may feel overwhelming since they are large pills, you can split them up throughout the day (e.g., 2 capsules in the morning and 2 in the evening). It’s recommended to take the capsules with food to help improve absorption and reduce potentially upsetting your stomach.
For best results, Nutrafol should be taken consistently every day, and it may take 3-6 months before noticing noticeable improvements in hair growth or thickness.
How much does Nutrafol cost?
To see results, using Nutrafol for hair growth can be a significant investment. A one-month supply costs around $88—but you can save when buying more than one at a time and the more you buy at once, the bigger the savings. Plus, you can find coupons, discounts, free shipping and enlist cashback apps like Rakuten to save at sites like Sephora to help keep the cost down.
